Mobile Welding vs Shop Welding: Which One Do You Need?

By Poncho Welding · Updated October 25, 2026 · 4 min read

Quick answer

Choose mobile welding when the piece is too big, too heavy or too attached to move: gates on their posts, loaded trailers, railings and vehicles at your home. Choose a shop when the piece is small, portable and needs a lot of fabrication time. Poncho Welding in Arvada does both.

When mobile welding is the better choice

Mobile welding is built for work that cannot move. If a gate is hung on posts set in concrete, a railing is bolted to your porch or a trailer is loaded with equipment, taking it apart or towing it to a shop adds cost and risk. A mobile welder arrives with a generator, MIG and stick equipment and cutting tools, and does the repair in place.

  • Gates, fences and railings that are installed in the ground or on a structure
  • Trailers that are loaded, hitched or unsafe to tow with a cracked frame
  • Vehicle exhaust and undercar work you would rather do in your driveway
  • Equipment on a job site that cannot be shut down and hauled away
  • Anything where scheduling a tow costs more than the repair

When a welding shop is the better choice

A shop is better for small parts you can carry, projects that need heavy fixtures, long fabrication time or specialized equipment like a press brake or large bench. A one-off custom bracket or a muffler build with a lot of test-fitting often goes faster in a controlled shop environment.

Poncho Welding has a shop at 5685 Sheridan Blvd in Arvada for exactly that reason. You can drop off smaller pieces and custom builds there, and we bring the rig to you for everything that cannot travel.

How to decide in 30 seconds

Ask yourself three questions: Can I safely move it? Is it attached to something? Would moving it cost more than the repair? If you answered no, yes, yes, you want a mobile welder. If you answered yes, no, no, a shop visit is probably simplest.

What it costs

Pricing depends on the job, not just where it happens. For most of our core service area we do not add a separate trip fee, and we quote the work directly. A mobile repair often costs less overall once you remove towing, rented equipment and downtime.
